Choose the characters first, then the reservation
A character meal is worth considering when meeting those characters matters to your group and a seated meal fits your park day. It is a poor fit when you would spend the meal watching the clock for a ride reservation. Start with the characters your travelers actually want to see, then compare the location, meal period, menu, and total cost.
The comparison below covers selected popular options, not every character meal at Walt Disney World. Open the official restaurant page before booking: characters, menus, prices, and operating hours can change.
Popular character meals compared
| Restaurant | Location | Character meal periods | Character focus and planning tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chef Mickey's | Contemporary Resort | Breakfast and dinner | Mickey and friends; compare with your Magic Kingdom schedule. |
| Topolino's Terrace | Riviera Resort | Breakfast only | Mickey and friends in artistic outfits; dinner is a different offering. |
| Garden Grill | EPCOT | Breakfast, lunch, and dinner | Chip, Dale, and Disney friends; fits a park day near The Land. |
| The Crystal Palace | Magic Kingdom | Breakfast, lunch, and dinner | Winnie the Pooh and friends; Disney recommends allowing 90 minutes for all available characters. |
| 'Ohana | Polynesian Village Resort | Breakfast only | Lilo, Stitch, and friends; no characters at dinner. |
| Tusker House | Animal Kingdom | Breakfast, lunch, and dinner | Donald and Disney friends in safari attire; include the buffet in your park route. |
| Akershus Royal Banquet Hall | EPCOT | Breakfast, lunch, and dinner | Disney Princesses; compare meal periods and Dining Plan credits. |
| Cinderella's Royal Table | Magic Kingdom | Breakfast, lunch, and dinner | Princess dining inside Cinderella Castle; check payment and cancellation terms. |
| Story Book Dining at Artist Point | Wilderness Lodge | Dinner | Snow White, Dopey, Grumpy, and The Queen; a resort dinner option. |
| Cape May Cafe | Beach Club Resort | Breakfast only | Minnie and friends; the dinner buffet is not character dining. |
| Hollywood & Vine | Hollywood Studios | Breakfast, lunch, and dinner | Disney Junior at breakfast; Minnie's seasonal offering at lunch and dinner. |
| 1900 Park Fare | Grand Floridian | Breakfast and dinner | Wish-making characters may include Aladdin, Cinderella, Mirabel, and Tiana. |
These twelve give you a useful first comparison: resort versus park, breakfast versus a later meal, and which characters your group wants. Character lineups can change. Check Disney's character dining overview and each restaurant's official page for current offerings.
How far ahead can you book character dining?
Disney's advance dining reservation policy allows reservations up to 60 days ahead. Disney Resort hotel guests can reserve eligible dining for their stay, up to 10 nights, beginning 60 days before arrival. New windows for select restaurants generally become available around 6:00 AM Eastern.
Put that date on your calendar and confirm that your resort reservation is linked to the correct account. Have your party size ready, including children, and pick two acceptable meal windows. Search the experience you most want first. A booking window is an opportunity to check availability, not a promise that a particular table will be offered.
If nothing suitable appears, consider another meal period, another date, or a restaurant that meets the same character priority. Keep an ordinary meal in the itinerary as a fallback. Do not make the rest of the vacation depend on a reservation you do not hold.
Breakfast or dinner: which fits better?
Choose breakfast when the meal itself is your morning priority. A long breakfast can use the same early hours you might otherwise spend on attractions. A resort breakfast also needs transfer time before you reach a park.
Choose a later meal when you want a seated pause during the day or an evening activity away from rides. Allow enough time to enjoy the character visits without overlapping a show or attraction return window. Topolino's character breakfast does not become a character dinner, so check the exact offering rather than only the restaurant name.
Choose a resort meal if you want a character experience outside a park day. That can suit an arrival or rest day, provided transport and check-in timing work. Dining at a resort does not automatically grant parking privileges for a full park visit.
For an in-park meal, you still need appropriate admission and any park reservation required by your ticket. A dining booking does not guarantee park access or an early ride advantage.
Compare the full cost, not just the menu headline
Use the current adult and child prices for the meal period you are considering. Add tax, any applicable gratuity, and transport costs. Then ask what you would otherwise spend on a meal and whether the character experience justifies the difference for your group.
If you have a Dining Plan, check the restaurant's current participation and required credits. Some experiences require more than one Table-Service credit. The Dining Plan comparison explains how to compare your package quote with the meals you would actually buy.
Here is an illustrative decision, not a price quote: a family already spending a full day at EPCOT may prefer an in-park meal over a resort breakfast that creates a second journey. Another family may value that resort breakfast precisely because it leaves its park days flexible. Neither choice is universally better.
Before you confirm
- Check the menu with everyone who has strong food preferences, and follow Disney's process for special dietary requests.
- Read the cancellation and modification terms shown for that reservation; save the confirmation.
- Leave travel time from your hotel or previous attraction. Avoid scheduling a distant ride immediately after the meal.
- Let children approach characters at their own pace. Paying for a character meal does not mean every child will want a close-up photo.
